Is social media turning us into a narcissistic society? Self-absorbed people who care about nothing else but the instant gratification that social media gives us. The instant gratification of “likes” and “comments” that people give us on social media makes us feel like celebrities for a brief moment. Maybe we are obsessed with the instant gratification because it’s an opportunity to be whoever we want. What we want the world to see is what they will see and we can say whatever we want with the push of a button. It has allowed people to become very brave at times, bashing and internet bullying other individuals because of the false confidence it gives cowards to dehumanize others.
In many ways, I despise social media because it sets the standards that we as women feel we need to live up to. (If I see another video of a girl listening to music and making faces at the camera while being silent, looking like a complete idiot I will scream!)There’s no originality anymore every woman has to have a fat ass, huge lips and fake breast to be seen as attractive. Or the perception that glorifies shaking your ass for money is a lifelong career and “goals”. I have nothing against being a stripper, it is your life live it how you choose. I just hate how people glorify things that degrade women.
And now to sum up my rant… I just feel if you have a platform and millions of people can see it at the touch of a button then use that platform for something more. Allow that platform to be utilized for awareness and something more than YOU all the time, doing things that will probably forbid you from getting a decent job in the near future. Allow social media platforms to be a space where you can share positive attributes and images of yourself as well as anything else that promotes prosperity and awareness.
I feel it would be appropriate to now insert the quote: “You must be the change you want to see in the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi
